The Minolta 70-210 f4 – nicknamed the ‘beercan’ for its obvious shape – is a funny lens, especially for £50. AF is noisy and rather slow but precise. Frame is rather soft and with noticeable CA and coma at f4, getting better and almost disappearing at f8. Handholding it is difficult for me without stabilisation, so I prefer to bump up the ISO and shoot at f5.6 1/400 at least and I still get the occasional micro-motion blur. Still for £50 is a really funny lens that apparently competes very well against equivalent (and 20x more expensive) Canon L-glass.
Two strolls arounds two different areas of coastal Kent made a good background to take this lens for a spin (I wanted to shoot the colony of seals in Sandwich bay but because of the floods it was inaccessible…).
